Lots of marketers will tell you to go where you find your audience in large numbers and market to them there.
Sometimes this could mean that you can’t afford to advertise so there are other ways to get in front of that audience.

We have a client that has a Property Investment business.
They help people invest in properties
Doing everything from making sure they can afford to get started, through to buying a great property and renting it out.
For this client the best place for them to find lots of people interested in investing in property is where investment properties sell.
The challenge was that advertising on the relevant websites would cost the client thousands of dollars per state.
Our client has offices in 4 states, so this sort of advertising is outside his budget right now, while he’s growing his business.
So instead of him going where the audience is, we’ve begun building an audience for him on Twitter.

The value of drawing the audience to you:
(1) You will always own the audience once you’ve built it up
With advertising, your audience vanishes as soon as you stop paying for your ads to run.
(2) Your offers and CTAs are not competing against your competitors
With advertising your ad could appear right next to a rivals ad and you might not have the choice, or even find out, until after the campaigns run.
(3) You control the content and message
Remember the problem YouTube had recently with advertisers stopping their campaigns on YouTube?
In that case, ads were being placed on racist, violent and even offensive videos.
(4) You control the timeline
You can insert and interrupt the publishing schedule whenever you like.
Swapping out one campaign for a new one as circumstances change.
With advertising you have to plan this well ahead and once it’s booked there’s no changes possible.
Why Twitter is a great social network for drawing the audience to you
Right now, Twitter doesn’t filter (personalize) your stream.
So whatever you publish gets shown to all people who follow you.
Facebook now has a “3% of your followers hardcoded into the reach algorithm”, so no matter how many followers you have, the only way to reach them all is to pay.
Twitter is an International platform (minus China)
If you’re thinking of expanding overseas, it a safe way to experiment.
The character count limit means that your translation costs are lower and it’s OK if the message is a little weird with syntax.
Just be 100% sure the translation is not offensive.
It’s a strong presence of respected and recognized news service
Services like Reuters, BBC World, Bloomberg, etc already publishing on Twitter.
Many now consider it a reliable source for news and information for business and corporate individuals.

You can be the authority in your niche and draw a large audience to you without having to pay for the privilege by creating high value content.
It’s one of the social networks that’s still pretty easy to dominate depending on your niche.
Australian businesses were early adopters of Twitter but turned their back on it due to the challenges with lead generation and engagement.
Yet, businesses that persisted found the strategies needed to get Twitter to work for them.
