Top Tips for Increasing Engagement By Elise Forsyth-Mort
Instagram is tipped to become the next marketing powerhouse for businesses so if you aren’t already its time to jump on board and ride the next social media wave…
Make Sure Your Page Is On Point
Lets face it, creating great Instagram content consistently is really hard! So the last thing you want is for all that hard work to go to waste just because your page is a mess. Fill in your name (so people can find you!), write an engaging bio and add a web address, this shouldn’t take you more than 30 mins and the results will astound you.
Hashed Hashtags
You live and die by the hashtags you use on Instagram, without a lot of followers this is how you get your content seen so don’t leave them to chance and do your research before you post. Do away with the generic #love #cute #girl and use some hashtags that are actually going to bring you some customers.
Put yourself in the mind of your consumer looking for your product, for example lets say you make designer concrete pots in Perth.
You would want to use the following hashtags or similar:
#PerthPots
#PerthConcretePots
#PerthProducts
#HandMadePerth
#MadeInPerth
#PerthSmallBusiness
… but do your own research, nobody knows your customers better than you do.
Don’t Be Afraid To Follow
There seems to be a stigma on Instagram around following too many pages or following more pages than are following you, this is crazy! Especially if you are just starting out you want to follow the kinds of people who could benefit your brand. How else are they going to notice you and the product or service you sell?
For example if you are a clothing brand following models and brand influences that fit your niche is exactly what you want to be doing. Engage with them, like and comment on their content. People seem to forget that Instagram pages are run by human beings a little love can go a long way which leads on to our next point…
Engage For Engagement
Now don’t mistake this as advice to start spamming but you do need to be present and active on Instagram everyday. There are only a few ways in which a potential follower can find you and to give yourself the best possible chance of growing your page as quickly as possible you need to engage on all of them.
(1) Hashtags
(2) You liked their photo
(3) You commented on their photo
(4) You commented on a photo they are looking at
Like photos the photos of people who are your ideal customers (use hashtags to find these people), comment on photos that align with your brand, join in conversations, collaborate with other business owners. You will be surprised how much you get back for every engagement you give and it ends up being a lot of fun too.
It is important also to look at how you are promoting your Instagram page off Instagram, is there a button on your website and in your email signature, is there an Instagram icon on your business card and on your flyers or other forms of advertising?
Happy Instagraming!!
